Musk deer is the smallest and the oldest hornless deer, whose males have long, protruding fangs. The animal is not bigger than huskies, so it is very difficult to detect it in the taiga. The most guaranteed way of hunting musk deer is hunting with dogs. It is necessary to have special dogs which are good in tracing. West or East Siberian huskies fit this option. Sometimes chases could long up to three-four hours. Musk deer, especially adult males, are very hardy, especially during the rutting season, so huskies have a lot of work to do. Musk deer are very good at confusing traces to run away from the dog, just as experienced hares do. The dog must be specially prepared and trained for the long chases. However, tired deer tends to look for large stones or rocks where dog could not reach them. In this case, the dog is barking, indicating to the owner the location of the animal. GPS collars are currently using, which greatly facilitates the search of the dogs. Good shoes are needed, preferably with spikes, because probably you will need to climb mountains in order to get to the trophy on such a hunt. This hunt is very sporty and dynamic, it requires a good physical shape from the hunter. There are only two months of musk deer official hunting: November and December. Siberian musk deer is included to the CITES rare animal list.
